Production props made by Room 4 artists

Kaitlynn and Vicky designed and painted this amazing button for, 'The Button box' production.  I'm sure you'll agree that it's pretty spectacular.

Yoga with Room 4 students

Room 4 students were very lucky to have Kate McLeay come in and take them for a yoga lesson. The lesson focussed on breathing and a few simple techniques they can use if they're feeling stressed or a bit overwhelmed.  It was a lovely way of giving the students the power to look after themselves and showed them the power of mindfulness.

Design and build an environmentally friendly home

In their groups, Room 4 students planned and created an environmentally friendly home.  They needed to consider water conservation, energy conservation and building materials they would use for windows, insulation, flooring and their roofing.

HNI Year 7 boys athletic champions

Room 4 are very proud of Jason and Tom.  They are the Year 7 athletic boys champions for HNI.  Well done to you both.

Te Reo - Room 4's language wall

Room 4 created their own Te Reo wall.  The students worked in partners and presented their masterpiece to the class and practised their Maori pronunciation.

Visual Art - by Room 4

For visual art in Term 3 we looked at Tom Scott cartoons and had a great time putting together our own cartoons to get a message across.

We also studied Banksy Graffiti and the students loved using their graffiti style fonts to illustrate words, that best described a 'Change Maker' from our Inquiry unit.  They've created a very effective back wall.

Published picture books - by Room 4 students

I am very proud of Room 4 students publishing their own picture books.  The students could choose to write a fiction or non-fiction book, proofread and illustrate and what a result!  Please come into our class anytime for a great read.

Room 4 - Term 4

Welcome back! Term 4

It was so lovely to get back to class and learn about everyone's holiday.  For literacy, I asked the students to write a recount.  They had to create 2 postcards to Mrs B, telling me all about their holiday.

So, it's the start of a new term, filled with plenty of new possibilities! Room 4 is so lucky to have an amazing new teacher, Mrs Baker-sherman! Our really artistic class has made some cartoons to represent change. We had to draw a cartoon that gave a message about making change. Here are some great ones that our awesome students have drawn! See if you can work out the messages!

Making Music and Memories at HNI

Room 4 have begun their cycle of music lessons and will attend classes with Mrs McHattie every Tuesday afternoon for Term 2. We're learning about different styles of music, composers and how to play the chords of D, G, A7 and Em on the guitar. With 17 Room 4 students learning an instrument through HNI's tuition programme, we could just about make up an orchestra of our own!!

Incredible Idioms!

Room 4 have been exploring Proverbs and Idioms, particularly those related to our Inquiry topic, 'The Incredible Human Machine'. We know an idiom is a common phrase or expression that means something other than the literal meaning of the words. Our task was to choose an idiom and present it in a creative way. Can you guess the idioms represented in our photos?

It was all body business today in Room 4!

Our Inquiry focus for Term Two is 'The Incredible Human Machine'. We will be learning how the human body functions and responds to change. Today Room 4 used materials (plasticine and paper) to sculpt and create body parts. We shared and discussed what we already know about the physical human machine and posed questions about things we would like to discover on our Inquiry journey this term. In the Technology Challenge task 'Congratulations Doctor' below, we had to create the following organs: heart, lungs, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, bladder, liver, kidney, oesophagus and  brain and place them in the correct position on our patient's body. We're sure we would all have passed medical school with flying colours with these efforts!!

Can you guess the body parts/organs we have sculpted below?

Orienteering.....A Real World Maths Challenge.

In Maths, Room 4 are focusing on learning to work with coordinates, using simple scale maps and following directions using a map when given instructions. This afternoon we were given the opportunity to practise these mathematical concepts through taking part in Orienteering. We had a choice of maps to follow, starting from basic to more advanced. Some of us worked individually while others chose to tackle the courses in small groups. We were all challenged and enjoyed working with mathematical ideas in a real life situation. Take a look at some of the action in our Flipagram below.

Kotahitanga Week at HNI, Room 4's Powhiri.......

On Tuesday afternoon, Room 4 (Tangata Whenua) held a powhiri with Room 12 as our manuhiri. After welcoming our guests and sharing the stories behind our pou in the hall, we invited them back to our classroom. Here we made a presentation based on your learning so far this year. Everyone in Room 4 made a contribution to this and were justifiably proud of their efforts. To conclude our celebration, we shared a wonderful array of kai, which had been provided by the students and parents of Room 4. Thank you to all of our parents who were able to join us. A big thank you also to Waipiata, Abbie, Jason, George and Tobias who all accepted supporting speaking roles during our powhiri. Please view our Flipagram below..... 'He waka eke noa' A canoe which we are all in with no exception (we are all in this together).

Our Pou, Our Story.....

Our Pou represents a variety of our students’ ideas, combined to create our final design.
The hands are symbolising the many different cultures that make up our class.
The mountains display the importance of our House icon Sir Edmund Hillary. His quote ‘It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves”, reflects our understanding of HNI’s REACH values while striving to be the best we can be.
Each student created a collaged square, incorporating the colours of the flags, which represent the many nationalities in Room 4.
The Koru is a symbol of growth, strength and peace. Here it also symbolises our new start, as year sevens, at H.N.I.
The manu in the sky reveals an important motivational message, “Ko Te Rangi Ko Te Rohe - The Sky's The Limit.

'Eye-Spy' Art. Reflections of our Special Place.

Proud of our 'Place Poems'.........using our senses-looks like, sounds like, feels like, smells like, tastes like......

Lumsden Poem
The smell of cooking fills the clean air and somewhere far
off a cow bell rings.
Bubbles fill the sink as the dishes splash into it.
Tiny ornaments twinkle in the swirly, coloured windows
and the taste of dinner fills your mouth.
Warm soapy water rests on your hands.

My place is like that.

Outside, the bushes are a maze.
Twisting turning shrubs blend with the brightly coloured flowers
and some old rusty chairs perch on the grass.
A badminton net rises tall in a clearing,
with racquets carelessly scattered beneath.
An old stone wall separates the garden
from black and white cows that roam up a grassy hill.

My place is like that

Clean, fresh air surges around you like a swarm of bees
and cows moo somewhere in the distance.
The old house stands tall and proud behind you,
your bare feet sink into the lush grass.
A sense of excitement fills your body like adrenalin,
pushing you to explore.

My place is like that

The taste of bubblegum hangs around
the pink and blue bedrooms.
The steep stairs creak with the weight of plant pots

and old CDs fill the cupboards on the indoor balcony.
Music faintly plays in living room below.
Fluffy teddy bears dot the rooms,
like sheep in a field.
A sensation of home.

And Lumsden is like that.

By Malena Shakespeare. Rm 4

Tukituki River

The rapids rush and
the rocks overturn.
The rainbow trout whizzing
through the silver water.

My place is like that.

The aroma of decaying
wood fills the air.
Lying on your back in the river,
current pulling you along.

My place is like that.

All the stones on the bank
perfect for skimming.
Algae gathers on the edges of the river
and trips you up.

My place is like that.

No sand to irritate your skin
if you lie down.
The taste of smoked fish
emanates over your tongue.

Tukituki is like that.
