Room 12 have been learning the structure of explanation writing. We have all chosen a topic based on the human body and have written explanations to share our new knowledge with our audience.

Incredible eyes

Eyes are amazing. They are windows to the world around you. Without them you would not be reading this right now, or you wouldn’t see the amazing things you look at around the world.

While the eye is incredible, what is to protect the eye from water, sun, dust and debris. Well you may think that eyebrows are just hair randomly placed on your head, but they have a purpose, to prevent sweat and water from dripping down into your eye. Eyelashes protect the eye from dust and debris because when something touches them it triggers the eyelids to blink. Blinking also helps keep the eye moist by spreading a lubricant over the eyes.

In order to see, there must be light. Light reflects off an object and and if one is looking at the object it enters the eye. The first thing light touches when entering the eye is a thin veil of tears that coats the front of the eye. Behind this lubricating moisture is the front window of the eye, called the cornea. This clear covering helps to focus the light.

The light then reaches the retina [back of the eye] and travels up the optic nerve. Your eye sends the picture to your brain and your brain turns the picture the right way up and tells you what you are looking at. So you see things the right way up. Once you see the picture in your eyes its constantly changing to the world outside.

Seeing is an important sense. It is amazing how people see and how fast the brain interprets the Images. I think without them the world would not be the same.
